Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum led officials of the Drug Enforcement Agency to burn some drugs seized by the agency on Friday.
During the meeting, which was organized by NDLEA chairman Colonel Mustapha Abdallah, 20 tonnes equivalent to 20,000 kilograms of drugs seized by the agency were burnt.
A statement from the state government said the ceremony was held at Muna on the Maiduguri-Gamboru road in Borno State.
Among the dignitaries who attended the ceremony were His Highness Shehun Borno – who was represented – as well as senior Nigerian military officials, commissioners, and religious leaders.
The statement added that the burning of the drugs followed an order issued by a Federal High Court.
In his remarks, Governor Umara Zulum said he was shocked by the number of drugs seized by the and said his government would continue to support the agency in the fight against drug abuse.
Nigeria is plagued by young men and women who are addicted to drugs in various parts of the country, resulting in their deaths.
